The world you were raised to survive in no longer exists. There is truth to that quote, and it's always been true of every generation. I was raised in a world without smartphones; being an iPad kid wasn't even an option.

There are some good things about the "death" of that late '90s world, that culture. The world I was raised to survive in was homophobic and hadn't confronted systemic racism or white supremacy. It had its flaws, just as our contemporary culture does.

When I think about the world I was raised for, it's a creative one, a "go play outside" one, an analog one. It's connective and present and expansive, traits that we can cultivate and bring with us into any future.

To that end, here's a film photo from somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains of my dad, sister (pacifier in), and me. We still play in those mountains, and the sense of wonder and adventure we were raised with continues on. Even the fashion choices are kind of back, so maybe bits of that world do still exist.
